Obituary:

WILBUR NELSON LANDON passed away Thursday February 4, 2010 at Thornapple Manor, at the age of 97. He was born on August 4, 1912 in Carlton Township, the son of Cleon and Nina (Root) Landon, who have preceded him in death. He attended Carlton School and enjoyed farming, and had a sheep shearing business with his brother Richard. Doctors discovered that he had Diabetes the summer of 1921, and he was told he probably would not survive passed his 15th birthday. By 2009 he had already had 82 bonus years. He married Annetta Harry on October 13, 1937, who preceded him in death September 25, 2005. Wilbur and Annetta helped raise several nieces and nephews although never able to have children of their own. Due to Wilbur's diabetes they were not allowed to adopt. He worked for the City of Hastings, for 32 years, retiring in 1977, the last fifteen years he was running the Water Treatment Plant. Wilbur helped install the radio tower on M-43 Highway north of town, where his initials still remain. He is survived by his brother, Wayne (Ruth) Landon of Freeport, MI and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard, Russell, and James Landon; sisters, Amber Jackson, Leona Yarger and Leta Messecar. Wilbur's family will celebrate his life Saturday February 6, 2010 at Lauer Family Funeral Home-Wren Chapel 1401 N. Broadway Hastings at 2:00PM with visitation being an hour prior to the service. Reverend Don Brail officiating. Interment will take place at Fuller Cemetery.
